The vision for the “urban igloo” was to embrace and celebrate the indigenous culture of Canada into urban cities. The concept behind this design was to create a public art feature to be incorporated into public skating areas. The urban igloo is a modern spin on the traditional igloo, also known as a snow house or snow hut, which provides both shelter and visual interest.
The Inuit language word iglu (plural igluit) can be used for a house or home built of any material, and is not restricted exclusively to snowhouses. For this project the shape was more essential than the material it is to be constructed from. The shape is symbolizes a modern house form, rather than the traditional dome shape.
The transparent skylights which flow down the sides of the structure create interesting shadow lines and help bring in the surrounding views.
